LGBT+ in Facilities Management

Celebrating 10 years of visibility, advocacy, and impact (2016–2026)

Founded in 2016, LGBT+ in Facilities Management (FM) was created in response to a clear gap - the lack of representation, visibility, and support for LGBTQ+ people working across the FM industry.

Ten years on, the network has grown into a respected, industry-wide platform for advocacy, collaboration, and practical change. What began as a small group of committed volunteers is now a visible and influential voice, working with individuals, organisations, and partners to help shape a more inclusive, equitable, and supportive FM sector.

As the global and political landscape for LGBTQ+ communities becomes increasingly complex - with hard-won rights challenged in some regions and inclusion deprioritised in others - our work has never been more relevant. LGBT+ in FM exists to ensure that progress within our industry is protected, strengthened, and continues to move forward

Our Mission

Our mission is to transform the FM industry by creating a culture where LGBTQ+ people feel a genuine sense of belonging, are respected and valued, have equitable access to opportunity, and are supported to thrive - regardless of role, organisation, or location.

Belong

We champion LGBTQ+ representation and inclusion by:

• Building visible, connected communities across the FM sector

• Challenging isolation and exclusion wherever they appear

• Encouraging allyship and shared responsibility for inclusion

• Creating spaces where people feel safe to be themselves

Educate

We drive meaningful and lasting change by:

• Increasing awareness of LGBTQ+ experiences and challenges

• Supporting organisations to build inclusive policies and practices

• Sharing insight, resources, and lived experience across the industry

• Encouraging open, informed, and respectful conversations

Thrive

We empower LGBTQ+ professionals, allies, and corporate partners to:

• Grow their confidence, capability, and careers

• Lead with authenticity and integrity

• Contribute to a more diverse, resilient, and innovative FM industry

• Influence positive change within their organisations and beyond

Our Vision

We envision an FM industry where inclusion is not optional or performative, but embedded - where LGBTQ+ people are safe to be themselves, supported to progress, and able to achieve their full potential without barriers.

An industry that does not step back in challenging times, but:

• Stands firm in its commitment to equality and dignity

• Acts with courage when inclusion is tested

• Continues to move forward, not backwards

• Recognises that respect and belonging strengthen everyone

Our Story

LGBT+ in FM began with an idea - and the determination of a small group of volunteers who believed the industry could be better.

Through perseverance, collaboration, and shared purpose, that idea became action. Over the past decade, the network has grown into an established committee of professionals who freely give their time, expertise, and lived experience to support positive change.

Together, we work to:

  • Improve visibility and representation

  • Influence industry conversations and culture

  • Create safer spaces for LGBTQ+ people and allies

  • Support organisations on their inclusion journeys

  • Champion progress that benefits the whole FM sector

As we mark our 10-year anniversary, we remain committed to the same belief that started it all: when people feel safe, seen, and supported, the whole industry is stronger.
